Summary
Studies of endoscopic and scintigrafic findings (performed by99mTc) in 129 patients with upper abdominal complaints showed that scanning defects could be found in 3 out of 4 patients with circumscribed gastric lesions; however, false positive scanning results were obtained in 42% of all endoscopically normal stomachs and in 54% of all patients who had no demonstrable circumscribed active gastric lesion at the time of the examination.
A differentiation between malignant and benign gastric lesions by means of scanning seems not to be possible.
Additional studies in two different series were carried out: in the first the examiner of the gastric scans was informed about the endoscopic result, in the second series he had no knowledge about the gastroscopic findings. The results in both series were greatly divergent.
An interpretation of scanning findings in the stomach without knowledge of the clinical, radiological and endoscopic findings was not possible. Gastric scanning performed under the technical conditions which are available today neither seems to be an additional diagnostic tool nor a useful screening test in gastric disease.
