Benign Tumors of Oesophagus: Value of Endoscopy

Summary

Endoscopic examination carried out in 20 000 patients allowed 7 benign tumors of the oesophagus to be detected. Four of them where intramural tumors corresponding to leiomyomas. Guided biopsies are not sufficient to assure an accurate diagnosis, but a mucosal lesion, particularly a carcinoma, should be ruled out. Endoscopic resection of the 3 intraluminal tumors was performed without incidents, allowing an accurate histologic diagnosis and a reasonable therapeutic approach. Endoscopic supervision is necessary in case of epithelial tumors.

Zusammenfassung

Die endoskopische Untersuchung von 20 000 Patienten führte auch zur Aufdeckung von 7 gutartigen Tumoren der Speiseröhre, viermal handelte es sich um intramurale Tumoren (Leiomyome). Die gezielte Gewebsentnahme reicht nicht aus, um eine histologische Bestätigung zu bekommen, eine Schleimhautveränderung, insbesondere ein Karzinom, läßt sich jedoch ausschließen. Eine endoskopische Abtragung von drei intraluminal gelegenen Tumoren war ohne Zwischenfälle möglich.
