Summary
The endoscopic assessment of ulcer healing seems to be superior to the radiological approach. In addition, endoscopy with biopsy is also of value in the detection of malignant ulcers. Barium meal demonstrates the profile view of an ulcer best, endoscopy is better at assessing an ulcer en face. Discrepancies arise when x-ray studies show a small niche whereas endoscopy shows already complete epithelialization. Optimal information in the assessment of ulcer healing will be obtained in combining radiological and endoscopic methods.
