Abstract
The diploid and tetraploid strains of Mentha arvensis have been grown in a statistically designed experiment. The tetraploid offers no advantage over the diploid in the herb and oil yields. The oil from tetraploid plants contains less menthol and more of menthone, thereby reducing its commercial suitability. The tetraploid is also inferior, being susceptible to fungal and viral attacks.
