A PHYTOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE SEEDS OF ARISTOLOCHIA BRACTEATA
Publication History
Publication Date:
15 January 2009 (online)

Summary
In light of the results obtained from screening plants of the Khartoum area for the presence of alkaloids, it seemed evident that Aristolochia bracteata warranted phytochemical investigation in regard to its alkaloid content. In the literature no previous phytochemical investigation of this species proved the presence of quaternary alkaloids. In this paper the alkaloid Magnoflorine and two acidic compounds Aristolochic acid and Aristored have been isolated in a pure crystalline form. In addition two unidentified quaternary alkaloids have been separated in small amounts in a crude form.
The isolation of the alkaloid Magnoflorine in this work reports the first time this alkaloid to be present in Aristolochia bracteata.
