BITTER PRINCIPLES OF THE CUCURBITACEAE: BRYONIA DIOICA

Summary

Paper chromatography of extracts of Bryonia dioica Jacq. roots showed the presence of 14 neutral substances. Two of these substances were isolated using column chromatography and identified as dihydrocucurbitacin B and tetrahydrocucurbitacin I. Their mass spectral characteristics are compared and partially interpreted. A vanillin/phosphoric acid visualization reagent commonly used for cucurbitacins is shown to be useful in determining part of the structure of the side chain of cucurbitacins.

Zusammenfassung

In Extrakten aus Wurzeln von Bryonia dioica wurden mit Hilfe der PC 14 neutral reagierende Substanzen nachgewiesen. Zwei dieser Stoffe konnten säulenchromatographisch isoliert und als Dihydrocucurbitacin B bzw. als Tetrahydrocucurbitacin I identifiziert werden. Die Anwendung von Vanillin/Phosphorsäureals Farbregenz vermittelt eine teilweise Aufklärung der Seitenkettenstruktur.
