STUDIES ON SOME UMBELLIFEROUS FRUITS – PART II – Pharmacognosy of the Fruits of Cuminum cyminum L.

Summary

The fruits of Carum Carvi L. und C. bulbocastanum Koch, go by the same Indian name „Kala” or „SiyahZira”.The oil content and nature of oil is different in the two fruits, the latter having no carvone, which is the chief ingredient of the former. The present work reports the pharmacognostic characters of the dyed fruits of Cuminum cyminum that also are sold as „Kala Zira” on Indian markets.

Zusammenfassung

Unter dem gleichen indischen Namen werden die Früchte von Carum carvi und Carum bulbocastanum gehandelt. Da der letztgenannten Art der Hauptbestandteil des echten Kümmels, das Carvon, fehlt, ist sie als Verfälschung zu bezeichnen. In vorliegender Arbeit werden die pharmakognostischen Merkmale von Cuminum cyminum, das in gefärbtem Zustand ebenfalls als Verfälschung gehandelt wird, beschrieben.
