Summary

Zanthoxylum alatum Roxb., a shrub or small tree of the Rutaceae family native to hot valleys of subtropical Himalayas, forests undergrowths from Jammu to Bhutan and Khasia Hills, is reputed for its medicinal value. In this paper the description of the plant, histology of stem, leaf and fruit, ash values of shoot and fruit and extractives of fruit are given. Among the diagnostic anatomical characteristics of this drug are the following: the presence of rosette aggregate of calcium oxalate in cortex of stem, spongy cells of leaf and mesocarp cells of fruit; presence of schizo– lysigenous oil glands in all the parts of the plant; a characteristic and similar shape of the epidermis in T. S., seen in all the parts of the plant; the absence of cork in fairly old stems.

Das in Indien als Carminativum und Stimulans benutzte Zanthoxylum alatum wird pharmakognostisch beschrieben.
