Abstract

Transcatheter treatment of mitral valve pathologies has been established in 1984, when the first balloon valvuloplasty for mitral stenosis was performed [8]. Nowadays, new transcatheter techniques for mitral valve repair in patients with mitral regurgitation are undergoing clinical trials. Due to the different etiologies of mitral regurgitation, mutliple approaches are being tested: Direct repair is attempted using the Evalve Mitral Clip device and the Edwards Mitral Suture device. If the coronary sinus lies adjacent to the mitral annulus, a device may be implanted to improve mitral valve coaptation. Other devices use an intra-ventricular or intra-atrial approach to move the posterior mitral leaflet forward to achieve the same result. Whether or not catheter interventions using these new devices may become an alternative to traditional surgery has to be shown in the ongoing clinical trials.
