Spontaneous Closure of Macular Hole: One-Year Follow-up with Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography

Idiopathic macular hole is a common vitreoretinal interface abnormality affecting predominantly healthy women in their 60 s [10]. Pars plana vitrectomy is considered the treatment of choice, offering good anatomical and functional results in most cases [4]. However, spontaneous closure of idiopathic macular holes has also been reported [1] [2] [6] [7] [8].
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a newly developed technique that enables noninvasive imaging of ocular structures. Its great value in the evaluation of anatomical abnormalities of the macula has been repeatedly demonstrated. OCT is considered today an appropriate method to follow-up idiopathic macular holes pre- and postoperatively [3]. Spectral-domain (or Fourier-domain) OCT constitutes an improved technique for retinal imaging. It uses a spectrometer in the detection arm of the interferometer to convert depth information. This enables detection of weaker signals and increases imaging speed by ˜ 25 to 50 times over standard OCT, performing up to 19 000 A-scans per second [9].
We hereby present the findings of spectral-domain OCT in a case of spontaneous closure of macular hole.
