Summary
In 101 patients a catheter was placed into the vena cava via the subclavian vein. There were only four complications of the method (damage to pleura). Only small thrombi (maximally 3 mm wide and 2 cm long) were found at the site where the intima was pierced, and in the form of small thrombi surrounding the wall of the catheter: none of these was of clinical significance. No late complications were observed even in those instances where the catheter was left in situ for up to one month five days.
