Summary
Büchner's dramas, written at the beginning of the nineteenth century (he lived from 1813 to 1837) in many ways resemble the expressionistic dramas of this century. The attitudes and behaviour with which Büchner endowed his characters were probably greatly influenced by the instinct theories propounded by Magendie in his textbook of physiology (several editions were published between 1809 and 1836), which were well known to Büchner during his medical studies. The psychological chapters of Magendie's textbook were, in turn, derived from the concepts of the Ideologists (Condillac, Cabanis, Destutt-Tracy).
