Dentale Asymmetrien: Ursachen und klinische Bedeutung
Dental Asymmetries: Causes and Clinical ImplicationsPublication History

Abstract
In order to account for existing dental asymmetries in an orthodontic treatment plan, one has to properly diagnose them as well as be aware of their cause and esthetic implications. These factors will be reviewed in this paper. The aesthetic importance of symmetry in the human face and therefore also in the anterior dental region has been shown in multiple studies. For all asymmetric discrepancies, there is a measurable and observer-dependant threshold after which they are consciously recognized and assessed as unattractive. There are many possible causes for dental asymmetries, including congenital predisposition. Although exact data on their prevalence is scarce, asymmetries are far from uncommon and therefore have to be carefully regarded in diagnostics and defining orthodontic treatment goals.
