Indischer Weihrauch (Salai guggal) bei rheumatoider Arthritis und Osteoarthritis
Publication History
Publication Date:
09 November 2009 (online)
Summary
Indian incense (Salai guggal) for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis Extracts from the gum resin of Boswellia serrata (BSE) have been reported to posses antiphlogistic and antirheumatic effects in animal experiments. These effects are thought to be due to so-called boswellic acids. Boswellic acids have been reported to inhibit factors which are related to the immune system. Clinical studies so far show that BSE have beneficial effects on rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Nevertheless the studies have only small numbers of patients and some of the studies have not been carried out according to the present scientific rules. On the other hand, since BSE have only little side effects and the diseases in question are mostly chronic and are treated with drugs possessing a number of adverse effects, further clinical studies with high scientific standards are necessary to finally prove their efficacy and safety.
