Introduction

Higher age and misconceptions about the seriousness of the symptoms are the most important patient factors leading to a delay in seeking medical attention for breast symptoms (Nosarti C et al. Br J Cancer 2000; 82: 742 – 748; Unger-Saldana K et al. Salud Publica Mex 2009; 51: s270–s285). In this situation, history taking may be misleading, since women often attribute long-standing palpable tumors to acute injuries or infection, presenting as medical emergencies.
