Zusammenfassung

Die Blattdroge von Agathosma betulina (Rutaceae) wird seit Langem von verschiedenen Eingeborenenstämmen in Südafrika als traditionelle Medizin zur Behandlung von Nieren- und Blasenerkrankungen, zur Entwässerung des Körpers und zur Behandlung von Entzündungen verwendet. Wichtigster Inhaltsstoff dieser Arzneipflanze ist das ätherische Öl, das durch Wasserdampfdestillation gewonnen wird und als Cassis-Aroma bekannt ist, mit einem hohen Anteil an Monoterpenen, wobei Monoterpen-Kohlenwasserstoffe und -Ketone mengenmäßig vorherrschen. Zusätzlich sind Flavonoide isoliert worden. Neuere pharmakologische Untersuchungen konnten antioxidative, schwache antimikrobielle sowie antiinflammatorische Wirkungen in vitro belegen. Bestimmte Blattextrakte zeigten in vitro pro-oxidative Aktivitäten und führten zu DNA-Schädigungen.

Agathosma betulina (Berg.) Pillans – wild buchu

The leaves of Agathosma betulina (Rutaceae) have been used for a long time by indigenous South Africans as a traditional remedy for the treatment of kidney- and bladder-disorders, fluid retention and inflammations. The essential oil, prepared by steam distillation of the leaves and known as “Cassis flavour”, consists of a high proportion of monoterpenes, especially monoterpenoid hydrocarbons and ketones. Beside the essential oil, flavonoids have been isolated from the leaves. Recent pharmacological studies demonstrate antioxidative, weak antimicrobial and also anti-inflammatory effects in vitro. First toxicological in vitro studies show DNA damages and pro-oxidative effects for certain leaf extracts.
