Aloe vera ist eine sukkulente tropische Pflanze aus der Familie der Liliaceae, die hervorragend in heißen und trockenen Klimaten gedeiht, in Asien, Afrika und anderen tropischen Gebieten weit verbreitet ist und auch in vielen Gärten in gemäßigten Zonen für medizinische Zwecke bzw. zur Zierde kultiviert wird. Ihr werden eine förderliche Wirkung auf die Wundheilung sowie fungizide, hypoglykämische, entzündungshemmende, antineoplastische, immunmodulatorische und gastroprotektive Eigenschaften zugeschrieben. Die bisher durchgeführten Studien liefern keine schlüssigen Ergebnisse, da viele von ihnen mit Tieren oder in unterschiedlichen galenischen Präparaten wie Cremes oder Extrakten durchgeführt werden.
