Die ankylosierende Spondylitis (AS) stellt eine chronisch-entzündliche Erkrankung des Achsenskeletts mit oft hartnäckigem, progredient-ankylosierendem Verlauf dar (s. Definition). Die Erkrankung wird von extravertebralen Manifestationen in Form von peripheren Arthritiden, Uveitiden, Enthesitiden, Lungen- oder Nierenbefall begleitet und kompliziert (Klippel et al. 2008).

Eine frühzeitige Diagnose und die konsequente Therapie können den ungünstigen Verlauf beeinflussen und eine frühzeitige Invalidisierung zumindest teilweise verhindern. Die Behandlung ist langwierig und stellt eine besondere Herausforderung an den Patienten, sein Umfeld und die behandelnden Ärzte dar.
