Both percutaneous gastrostomy and endoscopic gastrostomy have supplanted surgical gastrostomy in many hospitals as the initial procedures of choice for patients requiring long-term enteral feeding. Albeit rare, transcolonic placement of gastrostomy catheters may occur with either technique.
