Je schlechter oder verbrauchter der Gefäßstatus eines Dialysepatienten ist, umso weniger ermöglichen Standardverfahren die erfolgreiche Anlage oder Revision eines Dialyseshunts. Bei einer fehlenden alternativen Shuntmöglichkeit bedeutet dies unter Umständen auch, die Funktion eines Shunts trotz Komplikationen aufrechtzuerhalten, wenn der Patient diese Komplikationen alltäglich tolerieren kann.

In case of bad quality or reduced number of suitable shunt veins, normal standard procedures often do not allow the creation or revision of an av-shunt for hemodialysis. If there are no attractive alternative possibilities to create a new av-shunt, an existing shunt with complications must be preserved with the reduction of the complications to a level which can be tolerated by the patient.
