Summary

Injuries of equine incisors with opening of the pulp chamber need special treatments. Depending on the age of the injury different treatment options are necessary. Fresh injuries or iatrogenic opening of the pulp chamber can be treated within 6–12 hours with a vital pulpotomy. To eliminate bacterial contaminated pulp, 10 mm of the occlusal part of the pulp will be removed with a burr. The pulp will be covered with calcium hydroxide and the cavity will be filled with glass ionomer cement and composite. Older injuries have very little success with this procedure. They can be treated with a root canal therapy. All inflamed or necrotic pulp material will be completely removed from the pulp canal down to the apical foramen. If bleeding occurs because of severe infection around the apical foramen a temporary filling of the pulp canal will be done with calcium hydroxide paste, covered with a composit filling on top. One to two months after temporary fillings or following a routine root canal cleaning without bleeding, the pulp canal will be filled with sealer and guttapercha and covered with glass ionomer cement and composite.
