Akanthamöben-Keratitis

Einleitung
Die durch Akanthamöben hervorgerufene Keratitis stellt aufgrund der Variabilität ihres klinischen Erscheinungsbilds, der damit einhergehenden späten Diagnosestellung, des teilweise fehlenden Ansprechens der zur Verfügung stehenden Medikamente und des protrahierten klinischen Verlaufs eine besondere Herausforderung für den Augenarzt dar.
Die ersten Fälle, bei denen Akanthamöben als Ursache einer Keratitis beim Menschen nachgewiesen wurden, stammen aus den frühen 1970er-Jahren [1], [2]. Zu einer dramatischen Zunahme der Inzidenz an Akanthamöben-Keratitiden kam es Mitte der 1980er-Jahre durch die zunehmende Anwendung von Kontaktlinsen zur Refraktionskorrektur [3], [4], [5]. Von den kontaktlinsenassoziierten mikrobiellen Keratitiden sind heutzutage etwa 5 % durch Akanthamöben verursacht [6], [7].
