Neuroprotective Effect of Ginger Juice Against Dichlorvos and Lindane Induced Toxicity in Wistar Rats
Insecticides are the chemicals widely used in agriculture, environmental health, human-and animal-health fields. Exposure to insecticides has been associated with many hazardous effects, including neurotoxicity. Dichlorvos (organphosphate) and Lindane(organochlorine) are widely used insecticides, known to cross blood brain barrier and causes neurotoxicity in animals including humans. In present study neurotoxic effect of these insecticides and ameliorating effect of ginger juice was assessed. 84 male and female wistar rats weighing 150–200g were divided into seven groups. Group C served as the control group. Group D and L were administered dichlorvos and lindane at doses of 8.8mg/kg/bw respectively for 14 days. Group D+L was combination of dichlorvos and lindane at doses of 8.8mg/kg/bw for 14 days. Group D+G and L+G received posttreatment (14 days) of ginger juice (100mg/kgbw) after dichlorvos and lindane exposure. Group D+L+G was post treatment (14 days) of ginger after combined exposure to dichlorvos and lindane. After 14 days and 28 days of experimental schedule, animals were sacrificed and brain was dissected out for the estimation of lipid peroxidation, Non-enzymatic antioxidant, enzymatic antioxidants and histological examinations. The results showed that dichlorvos and lindane exposure alone and in combination altered biochemical parameters and produced abnormal histological lesions in brain of both the sexes indicating that the damage was not specific to sex. There was increase in Lipid peroxidation (LPO), decrease in Reduced Glutathione (GSH), Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), Glutathione-S-transferase (GST),Glutathione Perioxydase (GPx), Glutathione reductase (GR) and Quinone reductase (QR). Combined exposure in group D+L caused more damage as compared to Group D and L suggesting that neurotoxicity may be due to synergistic effect produced by both the pesticides.Ginger juice showed protective effect by decreasing the LPO and increasing GSH, SOD, CAT, GPx, GST, GR & QR and protein level in treated rats.
