Management von Krankenhausinfektionen – Ressourcenverbrauch und Kosteneffektivität
Management of hospital-acquired infections – Use of resources and cost-effective interventionsPublikationsverlauf

Hospital-acquired infections cause a financial burden to hospitals and society through exacerbation or prolongation of illness and subsequent in-hospital treatment. Several cost-of-illness studies have been conducted at German hospitals showing that the additional cost of infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) usually exceeds € 5000 per single infection. In addition, it has been shown that the in-hospital cost of such infections is largely not reimbursed under the diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) system employed in Germany. In the light of the available evidence, from the perspective of the hospitals, cost-effective interventions for the prevention of hospital-acquired infections are an economic necessity.
Key words
Hospital-acquired infections - costs - public health - MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) - prevention of infections
