Akute und chronische Lebererkrankungen können zu relevanten Einbußen der hepatischen Funktion führen. Routinelaborparameter beschreiben diesen Umstand nur unvollkommen. Auch zunehmendes Alter beeinträchtigt die hepatische Funktionsreserve. Wichtig bei der klinischen Beurteilung ist weiterhin die Frage, ob es sich um eine reversible oder irreversible Lebererkrankung handelt.

Acute and chronic liver diseases as well as older patient age can result in a more or less significant impairment of hepatic function. Whereas acute liver disease will normally lead to reversible changes of hepatic function, chronic disease can lead to end-stage failure of the organ.
