The role of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and the antiradical protection status in the pathogenesis of benign hyperplastic processes of endo- and myometrium requires further clarification. The data that we observed describe the level of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the integral index of lipid peroxidation (LPO) in blood and tissues of women with a combination of hyperplastic processes of endo- and myometrium.

The study involved 20 patients with a combination of benign hyperplastic diseases of the uterus, and 20 patients with uterine myoma only. To all patients from both groups surgical treatment was performed, and the diagnosis was confirmed by histological examination in the postoperative period.. The groups were comparable in terms of marital status, type of occupational hazards, body-weight index, presence of pernicious habits, fertility. The activity of SOD and the LPO index were determined using blood serum and obtained samples of intact myometrium and uterine myoma.

In the main group of patients SOD activity was significantly lower in all of the studied samples than in the comparison group of patients. The most observable was decreased SOD activity in the intact myometrium for the main group of patients. Reduced SOD activity was accompanied by elevation of LPO. In the intact myometrium and in the tissue samples of the myoma of the main group of patients LPO intensity was also higher.

Reduction of SOD activity may be responsible for the production of peroxynitrite which is highly toxic to tissues, and indicates to the deficiency antioxidant reserves.
