Seit dem Jahr 2002 gibt es eine Vielzahl von meist kleinen klinischen Studien zur sogenannten Stammzelltherapie mit dem Ziel der Angiogenese. Der nachfolgende Artikel wird den aktuellen Stand der wissenschaftlichen und klinischen Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet zusammenfassen.
