Jährlich reisen hunderttausende Urlauber aus Deutschland zum Tauchen in die Tropen.
Nicht alle kommen gesund zurück und manche gar nicht. Zu den bekannten physikalischen
und physiologischen Effekten des Tauchens, die durch Naturgesetze vorgegeben sind,
kommen im tropischen Klima noch zusätzliche Risiken und Gefahren hinzu, über die Reisende
im allgemeinen wenig oder gar nicht informiert sind. Hier sind taucherfahrene Tropen-
und Reisemediziner gefragt, die Informationen und gegebenenfalls Warnungen geben können,
weil Reisende vorher eher selten tauchmedizinischen Rat einholen.
Every year hundreds of thousands of German vacationers head for the tropics to go
diving. Not all of them return in good health and some not at all. This overview covers
not only the known physical and physiological effects of diving, dictated by laws
of nature, but describes the special risks and dangers due to the tropical climate
of which generally the traveler is not well informed. Two case histories illustrate
the unique nature of dive-related health disorders. Specialists in diving and travel
medicine are called upon to act together giving out information and eventually warnings
to travelers before they set out for their adventure.
