Abietane Diterpene Isolated from Hyptis Carvalhoi Harley (Lamiaceae) Induces Cell Death by Autophagy and Apoptosis
HCRH is an abietane diterpene quinone isolated from the roots of Hyptis carvalhoi Harley, an endemic plant to Bahia state (Brazil) to which no phytochemical investigation has so far been reported. In the present work, we evaluated HCRH activity in human adenocarcinoma HCT-116 cell line. HCRH showed cytotoxic effect in a time-dependent manner with IC50 values ranging from 18.5 to 4µM after 24 and 72h of incubation, respectively. HCRH also arrested cells in G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle and induced cell death by autophagy and apoptosis without causing direct damage to DNA. Further studies are in progress to determine its mechanism of action. Financial Support: CNPq, CAPES, PRONEX.
