Die Tätigkeit als Chirurg in einem Entwicklungsland besitzt eine lange geschichtliche Tradition, die bis in die Kolonialzeit zurückreicht. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entstand eine Phase intensiver staatlicher klinisch-medizinischer Entwicklungshilfe, die inzwischen einer eher theoretischen sozialökonomischen Systemunterstützung und präventiv ausgerichteten Primary Health gewichen ist.

Chirurgische Tätigkeit ist jetzt mehr im Rahmen privater und Nichtregierungsorganisationen gefragt. Eine Auslandserfahrung im Entwicklungsland stellt nach wie vor in allen Phasen der ärztlichen Ausbildung eine Bereicherung dar. Meist sind Auslandstätigkeiten – besonders in der Basisversorgung – für Chirurgen nur als vorübergehende kurze oder mittelfristige Tätigkeiten angelegt.
