Abstract

A very simple, convenient, two-step halide-free method for the synthesis of a novel homologous series of 36 room-temperature indazolium ionic liquids is reported, in which the indazolium moiety is substituted with different n-alkyl chains, and coupled with a tetrafluoroborate anion. As an example, the newly designed indazolium ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-2-pentyl-2H-indazol-2-ium tetrafluoroborate ([EPentIn]BF4) is employed as an ionic solvent to demonstrate its efficiency as a green solvent in a crossed aldol condensation reaction.
