Mittlerweile erfolgt fast ein Drittel aller Krankenhausentbindungen per Kaiserschnitt. Nach Angaben des Statistischen Bundesamts ist die Sectiorate in den Jahren von 1991–2012 auf einen Wert von 31,9 % angestiegen. Dies stellt eine Steigerung von 207,7 % im Vergleich zum Jahr 1991 dar. Auffällig ist die regional sehr unterschiedliche Kaiserschnittrate, wobei die Rate in den östlichen Bundesländern deutlich niedriger als in den westlichen ist. Die höchste Kaiserschnittrate weist mit 37,2 % das Saarland auf, die niedrigste Sachsen mit 23,7 % (Stand 2012, [1]).
