Abstract

In 2012 85.009 female and male students studied medicine at German Medical Schools. In winter semester 2012/13 the Federal Statistical Office ranked he study of medicine on the fourth position of the twenty most popular courses of studies. Furthermore, the number of students at Medical Schools increases continuously since 2007.

Nevertheless, the German Medical Association reported a significant demographic change in the medical profession at the end of 2013: the average age of doctors increased in the last years and the need of doctors will be greater in the future.

To counteract this trend, the German Young Forum of Orthopedics and Traumatology and the YOUngster’s are committed to youth development, try to make the conditions for doctors in training more attractive and to inspire students for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery early in Medical School.

Own preferences, influences and experiences before University, especially the way of teaching at the universitiy have a big influence on the choice of specialist medical training.

Hence, the YOUngster’s started a survey to find out the wishes, imaginations and satisfactions with the medical courses in Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery before and after getting in contact with this subject. The online survey was sent to all German Medical Schools and the students were asked about their gender, their university town and whether the subject of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery has already been completed.

Additionally, there was the possibility to write some words about their wishes and ideas for teaching. This article deals with the opinions of students about teaching in orthopedics and trauma surgery and shows how students imagine their training.
