Introduction
This chapter describes the current status of catheter-directed lytic therapy for occlusive thrombi of arteries and veins. A recent international consensus document, concerning the use of lytic therapy for symptomatic lower extremity arterial thrombi, has been endorsed by several international societies.1 A review of this document will serve to summarize current opinion on this topic. The present chapter addresses issues such as patient selection, techniques, and therapeutic efficacy. The techniques of arterial thrombolysis are being adapted to treat venous thrombi. Early results in the venous system are encouraging, but the long-term efficacy is yet to be established.
