Summary:
Objective: First description of a case of cyanide intoxication in a pony. Material and methods: Clinical case report of a four-year-old pony gelding. Results: Symptoms of intoxication appeared after cherry ingestion and included convulsions, dyspnea, tachycardia and lactic acidosis. A laparotomy was performed due to concurrent ileal impaction but the pony had to be euthanized several hours later. A postmortem toxicologic examination of gastrointestinal contents confirmed cyanide intoxication. Conclusion: Ingestion of significant amounts of cherries can result in a delayed onset of cyanide intoxication in the pony. Clinical relevance: Cyanide intoxication should be considered as a differential diagnosis in ponies with a history of cherry ingestion and symptoms such as dyspnea, convulsions, red mucous membranes and lactic acidosis.
