Summary
Within a total of 3 600 I131 thyroid uptake measurements performed, 415 thyroid suppression tests were carried out, using the method of Werner and Spooner.
Administration of tri-iodothyronine resulted in an average depression of the I131 uptake by 80% in euthyroid patients without goitre and with nontoxic diffuse goitre, and by 65% in patients with non-toxic nodular goitre. There was on the average no depression in patients with toxic goitres.
In toxic patients treated with I131, the suppression test has proved to be of value as a means to control the effectiveness of the therapy. Those patients who, after treatment, showed no further clinical symptoms of hyperthyroidism responded with an appreciable reduction of the thyroid uptake, whereas in those patients who still remained toxic after therapy the uptake did not change. The reduction was less significant in those patients who, although clinically cured, were still exophthalmic.
A comparison between the results of thyroid uptake, PBI131 and suppression tests done in the same patient indicated that the results of the suppression tests are more in accordance with the clinical picture than those of the PBI131.
The suppression test is of considerable value in the differential diagnosis between normal cases and patients suspected of hyperfunction not only before but also after radioiodine therapy.

Parmi un total de 3600 tests de fixations thyroïdiennes de l’I131, 415 tests de suppression ont été exécutés d’après la méthode de Werner et Spooner.
L’application de la triiodothyronine menait à une diminution moyenne de la fixation thyroïdienne de 80% chez des malades euthyroïdes sans goitre ou avec un goitre diffus non-toxique et de 65% chez des malades avec un goitre nodulaire non-toxique. Quant aux malades avec un goitre toxique, il n’y avait pas de réduction en moyenne.
Le test de suppression a prouvé sa valeur dans le contrôle de l’efficacité thérapeutique chez des malades traités avec de l’J131. Les malades qui après le traitement ne montraient plus de symptomes cliniques de Phyperthyroïdisme accusaient également une réduction considérable de la fixation thyroïdienne tandis que la fixation des malades qui restaient toxiques après la thérapie ne changeait pas. La réduction était plus petite chez des malades qui, bien que guéris au point de vue clinique, restaient exophthalmiques.
Une comparaison entre les résultats de la fixation thyroïdienne, le PBI131 et le test de suppression exécutés sur le même malade, a démontré que la suppression correspond mieux à l’impression clinique que les résultats du PBI131.
Le test de suppression est d’une valeur considérable pour le diagnostic différentiel des cas normaux et des cas suspects d’hyperthyroïdisme, non seulement avant mais aussi après la thérapie avec de l’iode131.

Bei einer Gesamtzahl von 3600 J131-Schilddrüsenspeichertests wurden 415 Schilddrüsenunterdrückungstests nach der Methode von Werner und Spooner durchgeführt.
Die Verabreichung von Triiodothyronin ergab eine durchschnittliche Herabsetzung der J131-Speicherung um 80% bei euthyroiden Patienten ohne Struma und solchen mit nicht-toxischer diffuser Struma, und um 65% bei Patienten mit nicht-toxischer nodulärer Struma. Bei Patienten mit toxischer Struma, und um 65% bei Patienten mit toxischer Struma war im Durchschnitt keine Abnahme zu verzeichnen.
Der Unterdrückungstest hat sich bei der Kontrolle der therapeutischen Wirkung an Patienten, die mit J131 behandelt worden waren, als wertvoll erwiesen. Jene Patienten, welche nach der Behandlung keine weiteren klinischen Symptome von Schilddrüsenüberfunktion aufwiesen, reagierten mit einer deutlichen Senkung der Schilddrüsenspeicherung, wogegen sich die Speicherung bei
jenen Patienten nicht veränderte, die nach der Therapie noch toxisch waren. Bei Patienten, die klinisch geheilt, aber noch exophthalmisch waren, war die Senkung geringer.
Ein Vergleich der Ergebnisse des Speichertests, des PBJ131 und des Unterdrückungstests bei ein und demselben Patienten zeigte, daß die Ergebnisse der Unterdrückungsteste besser mit dem klinischen Bild übereinstimmen als die Ergebnisse des PBJ131.
Der Unterdrückungstest ist wertvoll für die Differentialdiagnose zwischen Normalfällen und Patienten mit Verdacht auf Überfunktion, und zwar sowohl vor als auch nach therapeutischer Behandlung mit Radiojod.
