Zusammenfassung:

Gegenstand und Ziel: Beschreibung einer Intoxikation mit Clostridium botulinum. Material und Methode: Fallbericht einer fünfjährigen Golden-Retriever-Hündin. Die Diagnose erfolgte durch den Toxinnachweis in verendeten Hähnchenkadavern, an denen das Tier geleckt hatte. Ergebnisse: Die Hündin entwickelte innerhalb von 24 Stunden eine schlaffe Tetraplegie, die nach drei Tagen unter symptomatischer Therapie eine beginnende Reversibilität zeigte. Schlussfolgerung: Botulismus sollte beim Hund differenzialdiagnostisch bei einer progressiven Nachhandschwäche, aszendierend bis zur Tetraplegie berücksichtigt werden. Klinische Relevanz: Neben der Fallbeschreibung wird eine Übersicht über Pathogenese und Klinik gegeben und die aktuellen diagnostischen und therapeutischen Möglichkeiten aufgezeigt.

Summary:

Objective: Description of an intoxication with Clostridium botulinum. Material and methods: Case report of a five-year-old female Golden Retriever. The diagnosis was based on evidence of toxin in carcasses of fattened roosters wich were licked by the dog. Results: Within 24 hours the dog developed a flaccid paralysis of all four limbs. After three days under symptomatic therapy, symptoms began to reverse. Conclusions: Botulism should be included in the differential diagnosis in dogs with progressive hind limb weakness, ascending to tetraplegia. Clinical relevance: In addition to the case description an overview is given of pathogenesis and clinical signs, and the current diagnostic and therapeutic options are presented.
