Summary

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic pruritic skin disease, which often begins early in infancy and presents with increasing prevalence. The etiopathogenesis is very complex, but in the last decade it has become clear that T-cells play a prominent role. There are multiple, individually variable provocative factors. They should be identified by proper diagnostic measures and eliminated. In acute atopic dermatitis, therapy usually is with immunosuppressive drugs (topically or systemically). Generally, patients with atopic dermatitis should apply topical emollients daily to protect their skin.
