Summary
Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication is an effective and safe measure for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease in infants and children. It requires a high degree of minimal invasive surgical competence and a meticulous patient follow-up care. In the hands of experienced laparoscopic surgeons, the most prevalent complication is recurrent reflux in fewer than 5% of cases. Children who are conservatively treated for pathologic gastroesophageal reflux over several months without success should be referred to a specialized center for laparoscopic fundoplication.
