Erwachsene atmen sowohl im Wach- als auch im Schlafzustand zirka zwölf- bis zwanzigmal pro Minute. In allen Phasen gelingt es dem gesunden Körper, ein Gleichgewicht von Kohlendioxidproduktion und -ausscheidung sowie eine regelrechte Versorgung mit Sauerstoff zu erhalten. Dennoch treten charakteristische Veränderungen des Atmungsmusters sowohl beim Übergang vom Wach- in den Schlafzustand als auch während der unterschiedlichen Schlafstadien auf. Dieser Artikel soll einen Überblick über die schlafbezogenen Atmungsstörungen, ihre Auswirkungen auf das Herz-Kreislauf-System und den Stoffwechsel sowie die therapeutischen Möglichkeiten bieten.
