Summary
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a still new and promising field in neuropsychiatry. Combined with neuroimaging methods, such as PET, SPECT, and (f)MRI TMS provides the opportunity to analyze neuronal networks and delivers new insights into the yet not understood functioning of the brain. Thus, the integration of different imaging strategies and TMS offers more information on basic and therapeutic effects of TMS in the brain, enlightens the mechanism also of previous functional neuroimaging results and gives the possibility to deal with the controversial discussed topic of the optimal coil placement. In this paper we present an overview of this intriguing and rapidly advancing field.
