Summary
Venticuloperitoneal shunts represent the standard therapy for patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. The development of valve technologies started from simple differential pressure valves and led over programmable valves to programmable valves with gravitational unit. During this development the effectiveness of the valves could be improved while the rate of complication was lowered. The proportion of shunt responders raised from 60% in the 1960s to 90% today.
