Summary

Alcohol- and substance use disorders (ASUD) are considered to be among the most frequent comorbid disorders in bipolar affective disorders (BAS). ASUD have significant and negative influence on severity, course and prognoses of BAS. Based on a literature search, this review aims to present findings on epidemiology, causes and prognosis of comorbid BAS and ASUD. Finally, reporting recent results from therapy studies, consequences for treatment in BAS and ASUD are discussed.
