Summary

Intraocular inflammation during childhood remains a significant cause of visual impairment in Europe. Therefore early diagnosis and treatment are essential. Because of its often asymptomatic course and delayed detection uveitis in childhood frequently results in a poorer prognosis as compared to later onset. As a consequence about 20–30 % of affected eyes may suffer irreversible damage. Aim of this article is to provide insights in the characteristics of diagnosis and treatment in childhood uveitis to minimize the risks of secondary complications.
