Summary
This investigation demonstrates that most of the thrombogenic effect of small amounts of commercial thrombin is not dependent upon the calculated units of infused thrombin but rather upon its contamination with activated factor X. These data also reflect the need to re-evaluate the biologic effects attributed to thrombin itself in various studies in which thrombin preparations contaminated with activated factor X have been employed.
* This investigation was supported in part by Research Grant HE 09326 from the National Institutes of Health, United States Public Health Service, and in part by the Stella H. Shoenberg Research Fund.
