Selenium-enriched ricegrass juice (Se-RJ) has been claimed as a functional food by provide high nutritive value and various biological activities [1],[2],[3]. In this study, Selenium-enriched ricegrass juice (Se-RJ) and ricegrass juice (RJ) extracts were investigated for cell viability and their anticadmium (Cd) toxicity on kidney cells (HEK293). Pre-incubation, co-incubation and post incubation of Se-RJ and RJ on HEK293 towards the exposure to CdCl2 were analysed for DNA protective property by COMET assay. Results confirmed that Se-RJ and RJ had no toxicity to kidney cells. Se-RJ and RJ pre-incubation and co-incubation exhibited DNA protective effect against cadmiuminduced toxicity on HEK293 kidney cells by decreasing % DNA damage in tail and tail length of COMET over the CdCl2 treated cells [Fig. 1]. Moreover, Se-RJ showed additional benefits over the RJ for DNA protective properties. In conclusion, this study provides a clear evidence that SeRJ can a candidate functional food for renal protection.
