Eustachian Tube dilatation in patients with orofacial clefts
Eustachian Tube dilatation in patients with orofacial clefts Kamal, Scholtz, Sudhoff, Todt
Background The chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) is a common otological problem, that can cause aural fullness, hearing loss, tympanic membrane retraction, chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma. One of the therapy options is the balloon eustachian tube dilation (BET) to improve the tube ventilation. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of BET in patients with orofacial clefts (OC).
Methods In this retrospective study the data of 7 patients with OC, who underwent BET for the treatment of ETD. The success of the BET was judged by questionnaire, tube manometry, tympanometry and the assessment of the clinical progress.
Results The evaluated patients with OC did not benefit from undergoing a BET
Conclusion The BET is not an effective treatment for the treating ETD in patients with OC. Alternative procedures like grummets are more likely to help this group of patients.
