Abstract
Many chemicals can cause allergic contact dermatitis. This skin disease is mediated by T cells which damage skin cells. A prerequisite for the activation and differentiation of contact allergen specific T cells is the activation of the innate immune system. The resulting skin inflammation mechanistically resembles the innate immune response to bacteria and viruses. This overview describes the orchestration of skin inflammation in allergic contact dermatitis at the molecular and cellular level.
