Materialkorrosionen an der Implantatoberfläche mit Dissemination von Partikeln ins periimplantäre Gewebe und in entfernte Organe haben das Potenzial durch Makrophagenaktivierung entzündliche Prozesse auszulösen. Polymorphismen in den Genen für pro- und antientzündliche Zytokine prädisponieren chronische Entzündungsverläufe für Parodontitis und erhöhen das Risiko einer Periimplantitis (PI). Die PI ist eine immunologische Erkrankung bei individueller genetischer Suszeptibilität in Abhängigkeit von einer Materialpartikelbelastung.
