Patient reported outcome and success of bilateral and contralateral prophylactic mastectomy
Objectives There is a lack of studies that evaluate patient satisfaction after a prophylactic mastectomy using validated instruments. The aim of this study is to evaluate the oncological success, the patient reported outcome and the aesthetic outcome after a prophylactic procedure.
Methods A retrospective data collection and survey of all patients who underwent prophylactic mastectomy and reconstruction at the Breast Unit of the Kepler University Hospital in Linz (Austria) between 2010 and 2021 was performed. The patients were mainly divided into two groups: the first one includes patients who underwent bilateral prophylactic mastectomy and the second one those who received a contralateral prophylactic mastectomy. The results will be analysed separately.
Results 145 patients were selected, approximately 125 will participate to the study. The mean follow-up was 4 years. The patient reported outcome is evaluated through a validated questionnaire. The statistical analysis of the results is currently in progress.
Conclusions The data analysis obtained will provide an indication of whether patients undergone prophylactic mastectomy are satisfied with the result and if they regret their decision or not. This will be a guideline in the consultation of future patients with a genetic predisposition to breast cancer or/and a breast cancer.
